When Places Settle Slowly
There are places in travel that do not impress at first glance.
They settle into you slowly.
A Path That Returns You
The wooden boardwalks of the Shoreline Trail in Port Moody have become one of those places for me.
I have walked there many mornings.
And many evenings, after long circles that ended near dusk.
A Landscape of Calm
The water rests close to the wood.
Reflections move gently.
The path curves without urgency.
It is a place that calms me deeply.
A Hidden Layer of History
Yet when you pause long enough, another layer appears.
In the early years of colonization, this region demanded harsh labor.
Forests were cut.
Industry expanded.
Lives were shaped by survival and effort.
The Present Reality
Today, it is an expensive neighborhood.
Clean paths.
Organized beauty.
Peaceful walks with warm coffee in hand.
Holding Two Realities
Travel can hold both realities at once.
The comfort of the present.
The weight of the past.
A Reflection That Connects
If you have read Travel, Memory and the Sea’s Silence, you know that landscapes carry more than scenery.
Walking with Awareness
Walking there with warm clothes and quiet breath,
I sometimes think about those who shaped the land through necessity, not leisure.
The Weight Beneath Lightness
The boardwalk feels light beneath my steps.
It was not always so.
What Deepens the Moment
Perhaps that is what deepens the moment.
Not guilt.
Not nostalgia.
Awareness.
Moving Through Time
Travel does not only move us through geography.
It moves us through time.
A Simple Present Moment
And sometimes, holding a simple cup of coffee
while breathing clean air
is enough to feel the fragile value of the present.
