A Moment That Stops You
This photograph was taken from Granville Bridge in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, looking toward Granville Island and the marinas of False Creek.
Every time I cross the Granville Bridge on foot at sunset, the same thing happens.
I stop.
When Light Takes Over
Even if I was just passing through, I cannot continue walking while the sun is still touching the horizon.
The light slowly spreads across the water of False Creek, the boats become silhouettes, and the harbor begins to glow in gold.
Granville Island appears quietly in the distance, surrounded by marinas filled with sailing boats and small vessels resting after a day on the water.
Harbors and Time
Moments like this remind you that harbors are not only places of movement and travel.
They are also places where time slows down.
So I stay there for a while.
Watching the last light disappear behind the city.
A Reflection That Connects
Earlier I wrote about Where the City Naturally Becomes the Sea, another moment in Vancouver where the city skyline, marinas, and water become one continuous landscape.
Seeing Everything at Once
But sunsets from the Granville Bridge feel different.
Up here, above the harbor, you can see everything at once:
the boats, the docks, the island, and the quiet rhythm of the water preparing for the night.
The Value of Stopping
Sometimes the best travel moments happen when you simply stop walking.
