From Plate to Sea
This photograph was taken at Steveston Harbour, one of the most historic fishing harbors on the Pacific coast.
When someone sits in a beautiful restaurant enjoying fresh seafood, it is rare to think about the long journey that dish has taken before reaching the table.
Most people simply enjoy the taste and the atmosphere.
The Thought Behind the Meal
But every now and then, a different thought crosses my mind.
I think about the chef and the dedication, knowledge, and effort required to transform fresh seafood into a beautiful dish.
Behind every plate there is skill, patience, and creativity.
Where the Story Begins
But the story begins much earlier.
It begins far from the restaurant — out at sea.
It begins with the men and women who spend long days and nights on the water, often in difficult weather and unpredictable conditions, traveling across distant fishing grounds to harvest the seafood we later enjoy.
Seeing the Full Picture
Standing here at Steveston Harbour, looking at these complex fishing vessels resting quietly in the marina, that entire story becomes visible.
Moments like this remind me of another reflection about the deep Respect for the Professionals of the Sea, because when you truly look at these boats and imagine the journeys they make, it becomes impossible not to feel admiration.
A Single Feeling
Even when simply observing these powerful and complex vessels, one feeling naturally rises above all others.
Respect.
