A Place That Makes You Stop
This photograph was taken near the historic Burrard Street Bridge, along the calm waters of False Creek in Vancouver.
Every time I walk through this part of the city, I find myself stopping — even if only for a moment.
Calm but Ready
There is something special about the boats resting in this marina so close to the bridge.
They seem calm and quiet, yet at the same time they feel ready — as if they could untie their lines at any moment.
Close to the Open Sea
Standing here, you realize how close the open sea really is.
All it takes is a short passage beneath Burrard Street Bridge, and within minutes these boats can leave the protected waters of False Creek and continue their journey toward the vast Pacific Ocean.
Imagining Departure
When I watch them, I often imagine that moment.
The engine starting softly, the lines being released, and the boat slowly gliding away from the dock.
Passing under the bridge, leaving the city behind, and heading toward the horizon.
Respect for the Sea
Moments like this always remind me of the deep respect I feel for those who truly live and work at sea — something I reflected on earlier in my Harbor Stories about Respect for the Professionals of the Sea.
A Simple Truth
Because whether someone sails for pleasure or works on the water, the sea always reminds you of one simple truth:
It is always larger than us.
