From marinas along the Athens Riviera, the route gradually leaves the urban coastline behind and opens toward the Saronic islands.
Under sail, however, distance is only part of the story.
There is the changing wind, the movement of the boat through the water and the moment when Aegina begins to take shape on the horizon.

Aegina – An Island with a Long History
Aegina offers much more than beaches and seaside villages.
The island played an important role in the ancient Greek world and was a significant maritime and commercial power during the Archaic period. One of its greatest surviving monuments is the Temple of Aphaia, constructed around the beginning of the 5th century BC.
Centuries later, Aegina again entered an important chapter of Greek history when it briefly served as a centre of government during the early years of the modern Greek state.
Today, approaching Aegina from the sea brings these different layers together.
Fishing boats, sailing yachts and waterfront buildings belong to the present, while ancient sites scattered across the island reveal a history stretching back thousands of years.
The Beauty of Sailing in Greece
There is something different about arriving at a Greek island under sail.
The destination does not suddenly appear. It approaches gradually.
First there is a shape on the horizon. Then mountains and coastline become visible. Eventually houses, harbors and boats begin to appear.
